EDUCATION SYSTEM

SWEDES EDUCATION SYSTEM AT A GLANCE

The Swedish higher education system is similar to that of other European countries. Here are the basics! For higher education, Swedish universities offer degree programmes according to the European standard. This includes Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD programmes. These degrees are offered at University of at a University College.

Bachelor’s programmes: also known as undergraduate programmes, take place after upper secondary school (high school) and are usually three years long (180 ECTS credits).

Master’s programmes: also known as graduate programmes, build upon the knowledge developed during bachelor’s-level studies and can be one or two years long (60 or 120 ECTS credits).

PhD programmes: also known as doctoral programmes, are research degrees involving several years of work toward a dissertation. The duration and setup of PhD programmes in Sweden vary between universities; see PhD programmes for more details.

Almost all Degree programmes usually contain a mix of compulsory, recommended and optional courses.

University or University College?

Two slightly different terms are used in Sweden to describe institutions of higher education: university (universitet) and University College (högskola). The main difference is that universities have the right to award PhD degrees while many university colleges don’t. However, some university colleges do offer PhDs. There is no difference in the bachelor’s or master’s degrees offered by universities and university colleges, and many university colleges are called ‘university’ in English. As an international student, your experience will be similar regardless of whether you choose to study at a university or university college.

Academic calendar

The Swedish academic year is divided into two semesters:

Autumn semester begins at the end of August and lasts until mid-January, usually with a short break at the end of December.
Spring semester runs from mid-January to the beginning of June.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

BASIC ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS:

Undergraduate Admission: HSC or GCE “A” Level (a minimum of three principal passes in the appropriate subjects), the Australian matriculation or International Baccalaureate, Canadian Pre-University for Matriculation (OSSD). Minimum requirements of marks (CGPA) differ based on institutions and study programs.

Graduate Admission: A four/three-year undergraduate (Hons) degree programs (or equivalent) which is recognized in credential issuing country as well as in Sweden. Student with pre-master’s program from recognized institution is also eligible for admission in master’s program. Minimum requirements of marks (CGPA) differ based on institutions and study programs. Student who has completed master’s program with required results and other supporting academic achievements can apply for admission in doctoral admission.

LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENTS:

Acceptable proof of proficiency in English such as TOEFL or IELTS. The required English proficiency test scores vary from one institution to another based on students admission level. Students, who’s medium of instructions is in English at Previous institutions can be exempted from language proficiency test results requirement preset by swedes central admission system.

TEST SCORE REQUIREMENTS:

Generally no test score required for study in Sweden. But scores are advantages if you have any.

SAT is not mandatory but considered as advantage to get admission in some highly ranked institutions for undergraduate programs.

GRE (non-business) / GMAT (for MBA/other business related field) is typically an advantage (not mandatory) for entry into master and doctoral programs in highly ranked institutions.

VISA REQUIREMENTS

BASIC DOCUMENT REQUIREMENTS FOR VISA APPLICATION

ADMISSION RELATED REQUIREMENTS:

A letter of Acceptance (Confirmation of Admission) from a Swedes educational institution confirming the name and length of the program, tuition fees etc.
The decision on admission as a doctoral student with information about the time of admission (if you are a doctoral student)
All educational certificates & Transcripts (All documents should be translated to English if required with original).
Confirmation of any scholarship, grant, teaching or research assistantship including name of the providing institution or organization, awarded amount per semester or year and duration.
All other supporting academic & Professional documents that you have provided to your institution for admission/Scholarship/credit transfer.

FINANCING/SPONSOR OTHER DOCUMENT REQUIREMENTS:

Copy of Information and photo page of International Travel Document (passport) valid for the duration of your studies plus one month.
Two copies of most recent photographs (with white background)
Proof of payment of initial tuition fees (if you don’t have scholarship)
Proof of sufficient funds to cover your tuition and living expenses for your first year of study in Sweden (You must also demonstrate that sufficient funds will be available to support yourself during the whole duration of your registered program. The source of income of you/income is also required to demonstrate your authenticity of purpose of swedes student visa.
If some or the total amount of your funds are provided by a sponsor (either parents or third party) you must also include legal evidence of support with clearly stated reason of support.
Your birth registration certificate
Completed Visa Application forms 105031 (if you are not applying online.)
A copy of the document showing that you have comprehensive health insurance valid in Sweden (if you will be studying for less than a year). If you are covered by insurance from the university or University College (institute) concerned, you must provide a certificate showing this.
Payment of visa application fee.
